Last week, I shared the first half of our Costa Rican adventure in Arenal and La Fortuna. If you didn’t see that post, here is an important snippet:
The first international trip Matty and I took together was to Costa Rica, many years ago. It is important to note that it was many years ago, as these photos were taken with a point and shoot (I think I had a pink flip phone at the time)?, and it was way, wayyy before the era of instagram. Also, we look like we are 12.
After hiking and horseback riding and ziplining through the rainforest, we headed to Guanacaste to do nothing but sit on the beach. We stayed at Punta Islita, a laid back, luxury eco-hotel in small Islita town.
When: March 2009
Where: Islita, Costa Rica
Stayed: Punta Islita

Punta Islita is reached by a very, very long and very, very bumpy road. Nothing for miles, and then all of a sudden – wow! – you have arrived.
Unbeknownst to us, the hotel had upgraded our room to a honeymoon suite, complete with hammock, lounge chairs and a hot tub. Pura vida!
Here are a few must do’s if you visit Punta Islita:
Swim in the ocean.
Swim in the pool.
Boogie board and/or surf. The waves are amazing.
Head to karaoke night in town. Drink and dance and get real sweaty.
Hammock. All day, every day.
Walk on the beach.
Visit Islita town, and see all the beautiful, local artwork.
Try “iced coffee,” the Costa Rican way!
Go horseback riding on the beach, then up the hill for sunset.
Take a boat out for magic hour.
And meet some friendly lizards.
